This is an awesome question! Metals can be harmful if we drink them or if fish or other wildlife are exposed to them. Metals typically are only harmful if they are in solution or dissolved (like how sugar blends in tea). Enzymatic reactions allow the metals to transition (change) to a different form that CANNOT be dissolved. This removes it from the water making it safe. Bacteria are the primary producers of these reactions.
