Hail stones are a result of water freezing high in the sky. It is never in the form of rain, it starts as a frozen droplet 🙂

Hail is different to snow because it is not made of ice crystals but is actually a frozen raindrop, which is generally a lot bigger than a pure ice crystal.

hailstones form during thunderstorms and are frozen water droplets which make them larger and harder. compared to snow which is soft due to being made of ice crystals that have lots of space between them
