i use a variety of different petri dishes which contain a jelly like substance called agar. this is full of nutrients that allows bacteria to grow. different types of agar can allow or stop certain types of bacteria from growing. sometimes the bacteria grow different colours other times the produce fluorescence under UV light etc. i also use a things called API strips and vitek cards which produces a chemical reaction depending on bacteria growing, other tools would be a microscope
