I think being a scientist is important. Science is there to contribute new knowledge. We are at the forefront of new innovation and development in solving big human-made problems in the world today, such as climate warming, resource depletion (e.g. overfishing) and pollution.

I think all jobs are important, as the saying goes, some ones got to do it. However I do personally feel my job plays an important role in helping keep the public safe and provide safe clean water. As for do people want to do it, I feel there is a growing amount of people starting to take interest into science in general but I do believe that for MY job, there may not be enough awareness yet to being a microbiologist in the water field, however due to programmes like this and STEM Ambassadors going into school more people are being made aware which can only be a good thing 🙂

I think my research is important because I think it can make people’s drinking water better in the future. I know that I want to do it because I find it really interesting but also I have lots of friends who would not be interested in my job because they like other things. It’s like I play rugby so I like to watch rugby but I have other friends who like football better so they play and watch football not rugby.

As a scientist you always hope that your work will make a difference. My research will hopefully lead to better and more affordable (aka cheap) ways to clean up our water so we have safe drinking water in the furture. I do not know if everyone would live it, but I do. I get to do field work and see some truly beautiful (and also awful 😔) things. I love working in the lab too. I think doing something that will help people makes a lot of people want to do it!

It is important that some people are passionate about understanding better and better how things work. As well as it is important that someone is passionate about, say, livers, so they know how to fix them! Curiosity has driven the advance of humanity. Take your curiosity seriously, which means read and learn and tel other people what you have learnt. It will help you understand what it is that you like to do. If it is talking to people, well, that can also become a career!
