One of the great things about graduate school is that there is a lot of flexibility. The demands of my research varies from day to day and so do the hours that I work. It is usually somewhere between 6-10 hours each day.
I currently work ‘full-time’ as a scientist, so most of the time I work from 9am until 5pm with a one hour lunch break (so around 7 hours a day). Sometimes I work longer hours if I am travelling or if a big project deadline is looming.
I can be on a water treatment works and in the laboratory taking/analysing water samples or out and about at events learning/teaching or in the office writing
-Sampling days
8-10:30am travel to experimental site
10:30-12:30pm take samples, basic analysis on site
1-2:30pm travel to laboratory
2:30-5pm analyse samples in the lab
5-7:30pm travel home
-Office days
7:45-8:30am travel to the office
4:30-5pm travel home from the office
All of my working hours! I have flexible times so I can care for my family, but sometimes I travel or work at weekends, like the next Saturday, as I am starting a new experiment.
on an average day I would work 6-7 hours at the bench doing lab work with 1-2 hours spent doing paperwork. However I can be required to work longer if needed and have often worked 12 hours.
it varies! Some days I will work 10 hours, but I guess the average is around 8! I like to have time in the evenings to watch films (and play video games..)
